Double Deck Combination Laminator | Somex Automation
Challenge
The manufacturer needed a solution capable of laminating multiple catheter shafts simultaneously while maintaining consistent quality, precision, and repeatability across every production cycle.
Process
The automated lamination system incorporates core wire stretching after lamination, making core wire removal easier while minimizing manual intervention. To improve operator ergonomics and streamline production, the catheter shaft tooling automatically moves toward the operator for easier product loading and unloading.
The system features an innovative double-deck configuration with alternating upper and lower processing stations. This design enables operators to load and unload one set of catheter shafts while the other undergoes lamination, minimizing downtime and supporting continuous production.
For enhanced process control and repeatability, all processing parameters are managed and stored through programmable recipes, with integrated barcode scanning for quick and accurate recipe selection. CE-compliant safety features, including automated safety doors, provide additional operator protection throughout the manufacturing process.

Customizable Solution!
Your Process Development Challenges
- Torsional Stresses due to length of catheter shafts
- High stiction forces between silicone extrusion & tooling
- Potentially long processing cycles with traditional mandrel part loading
Our Solution to These Challenges
- Dual x & rotary axes enabling total control of both tube ends
- Tooling geometry optimized to reduce surface interactions
- Flow-thru drill eliminates need for sacrificial mandrel, reducing cycle time
