Automotive Component Press | Somex Automation
Challenge
An automotive manufacturer experienced inconsistent assembly quality and high defect rates due to uneven pressing force during the installation of light pipes into buttons. The application required a precise, flush fit between tightly mating components, with each press cycle completing eight assemblies simultaneously.
The existing assembly press relied on a single, centrally positioned heavy-duty pneumatic cylinder, resulting in uneven force distribution across the eight assemblies. This inconsistency caused some components to be over-pressed and damaged, while others were not fully seated, compromising product quality, repeatability, and production efficiency.
The manufacturer needed a more precise, reliable assembly solution capable of delivering consistent pressing force and uniform results across all eight components in every cycle.
Process
Somex Automation redesign included 8 suitably rated cylinders, one for each assembly; this facilitated individual adjustment for each nest. The operator places the 16 parts, 8 light pipes and 8 Buttons in the nests and then pushes the platen to the home position A sensor then activates the press, The device is designed and build to comply with the CE requirements.
